In honor of Latino History Month, Nike has collaborated with four street artists to design four different sneakers to give us the "Los Primeros" pack. Each “Los Primeros” shoe has a deep story that connects to the history of Latin American culture, in addition to expressing the modern identity and influence of Latino culture today. Friday, September 15th was the first day of LHM and every week they're launching a different shoe in the pack; an Air Max 1, Cortex, Air Force 1 and a Jordan 1.

On Friday, the Wasafu x Air Max 1 was released, and ya girl got her pair!! I have been so excited about this pack releasing and what it means for Latina like me, that on the first day I wore them out the store! For this pair, Wasafu, a Chilean street artist, took inspiration from the Selk'nam people (an indigenous people of Chile and Argentina) who experienced genocide in the nineteenth century in South America. They were nomadic people who migrated for survival and were known as "people on foot."

Allow me to say, that while the shoe doesn't entirely SCREAM "Latino," it definitely gives me the sense of being connected to something bigger. Not every latino "looks" hispanic or "exotic," and we all speak different variations of our mother languages, but not one moment passes where we should feel ashamed of our heritage. We aren't always who people pan us out to be and there's so much beauty in that -- we should take pride in being who we are. So shoutouts to Los Primeros! Pa' lante!

As someone who has collected sneakers for quite some time, packaging for any special release has been part of the fun of buying sneakers. The Wasafu x Air Max 1s did not disappoint -- premium black box with "Los Primeros" embossed on the side and the logo for the pack embossed right about the SKU and a super luxe dustbag in the same print of the shoes upper.
